Agios Nikolaos & Spinalonga Island Excursion

Along the north-east coast and through the gorge of St. Georg you can reach the peaceful town of AgiosNikolaos on the coast of the Mirabello bay. AgiosNikolaos is famous for its picturesque bottomless lake to entwine the numerous legends and was explored by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. Explore the pretty town on your own, you can stroll through the shops or relax in one of the cafes.

Next stop is Plaka, a small fishing village just opposite from Spinalonga Island. Plaka was the ferry port of leper colony. From there, we will take a small boat to reach the Spinalonga Island, which is an important part of the Greek History. The remains of its Venetian fortification and ghostly leper barracks almost untouched through the centuries, lies silently opposite Elounda’s coast. Spinalonga’s Venetian castle is one of the main castles in Crete which was never conquered uring the Turkish occupation.
